2017 Tax Season Data, April 2017

The 2017 tax season deadline has officially arrived and the IRS shares some facts and statistics for the current tax season (all stats are as of April, 2017):



  • 103.6 million tax returns were filed in 2017 

  • 80.2 million of those tax returns (about 77%)   provided a refund  

  • $228.951 Billion of refunds were paid so far 

  • $2,851 is the current average refund for 2017

  • Approximately additional 50 million returns are expected to be filed this year


For those of you who haven't filed your tax return yet, there is still hope, today is the last day to do so, or file a 6 months extension to avoid IRS interest and penalties.
